The Chinese Crested is considered to be a healthy breed with few health issues. However, all
breeds have health issues that you need to be aware of. As always, consult your Vet and do your
own research. The more educated you are-the more prepared you will be. The following is a list of
some of the known problems in the Chinese Crested (some are more common than others).
Subluxating Patella:
This is a disorder in which the knee cap is not properly formed and ends up slipping out of place. The
dog may show temporary symptoms for a period before the problem becomes apparent. It can be
caused by an injury or may be genetic. Surgery is the treatment of choice.
Legg Perthes:
This occurs when the ball of the hip joint deteriorates, possibly due to poor blood supply. The bone
becomes deformed and does not sit in the socket properly. Genetics are thought to be a cause as well
as trauma. Surgery is the only treatment.
Heart Murmur:
Heart murmurs can occur from several causes, one of which is due to a problem with the function or
formation of one of the heart valves. Many times puppies will have a benign murmur that disappears
around 1 yr of age. Treatment is not aimed at fixing the murmur but rather treating the symptoms if
any are present. These treatments usually include medications and possibly activity restriction. In
severe cases a murmur can lead to heart failure.
Hernia:
These occur when the muscles covering the abdominal wall weaken. Common areas include the groin
and around the ‘belly button’. Many times no treatment is necessary but in severe cases the intestines
can get caught in the hole which requires surgery.
Seizures:
Seizes can have many causes with some being: epilepsy, tumors, poison ingestion, infections, &
abnormal blood glucose levels. The seizures may be very apparent or barely recognizable. Treatment is
aimed at treating the cause if it is reversible or reducing the frequency of the seizures through
medications.
PRA:
This is a genetically inherited blindness due to degeneration of the retina in the eye. There is no
treatment for the disease and is prevented by careful breeding programs.
